Friday 56: Beat the Reaper

09 Oct

BeattheReaper_blueI haven’t posted a Friday 56 for a few weeks, but I wanted to join back in today.

From Storytime With Tonya and Friends:

* Grab the book nearest you. Right now.
* Turn to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post that sentence (plus one or two others if you like) along with these instructions on your blog or (if you do not have your own blog) in the comments section of this blog.
* Post a link along with your post back to this blog.
* Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

Today, that would be Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell. I have a giveaway up, and I’d hoped to have the review posted by now, but that didn’t quite work out. I’m really enjoying the book, and hope to finish soon!

Here’s the quote:

At one point, a couple of geezers from the ends of the table, looking particularly ridiculous with medallions and felt hats on, set slips of paper on fire and dropped them onto the Virzis’ palms. I tried this at home later. It didn’t hurt at all.

And that’s one of Peter’s early views of the Mafia. He gets more involved as time goes on, but he never really develops more respect, for them or anyone else.

    Is this fiction or a true account?
