Review & Giveaway: One Scream Away by Kate Brady

This book was a GREAT adventure!

From Kate Brady’s Web Site:

One step away…

Seven years ago Beth Denison was attacked by a killer named Chevy Bankes. Since then, she’s created a new life for herself and her daughter, one far removed from the night that ended in an awful tragedy. But now Bankes is out of prison, and his chilling phone calls tell Beth he’s coming for her.

One breath away…

Ex-FBI agent Neil Sheridan is driven to investigate a chain of murders that are eerily similar to a disturbing case from his past. When the killer’s trail dead-ends at Beth’s doorstep, Neil finds a beautiful woman with a secret she’ll do anything to keep. Yet even as Beth surrenders to Neil’s protection – and then his embrace – she can’t tell him why Bankes hungers to hear her scream, and why she’ll soon consider doing the unthinkable: face Bankes alone.

I really appreciated the cat-and-mouse back and forth as we saw how Chevy Banks (the Bad Guy) was stalking, taunting and teasing Beth Denison (our Female Lead), and as Neil Sheridan (Our Hero) started to interfere with his game.   The back and forth between the characters kept me reading, not wanting to put the book down.

Our Hero was a good guy but damaged by his past.  Our Female Lead was tough and feisty and in over her head.  The Bad Guy was a combination of mentally ill and pure evil. The dolls push the creepy factor over the edge.

Unfortunately, this book didn’t work as well for me as a romance. I didn’t really feel the attraction between the leads, although the author told me it was there. It also broke one of my rules of romantic suspense– the lead characters didn’t work as a team to face the danger.  I liked each of them individually well enough, both as people and as part of the story.  There were some good secondary characters as well.

Once I decided to read it as a thriller rather than romantic suspense, I completely enjoyed reading this book.

Thanks to Hachette Books, I’m giving away five copies of One Scream Away!  This is a great poolside read– or one to help you escape if you don’t have a chance to hang out on the beach this summer.

Well, lemme see: I subscribe to your blog through Google Reader and I follow you on Twitter 🙂 Valid email, yup….

I’ve been looking forward to reading your review of this book, btw. The book looks great as a thriller. When I think of romantic suspense, I think of Stephanie Plum. I love the whole Ranger-Stephanie-Morelli dynamic. And what exactly DID Vincent do with that duck, anyway? When I think of thrillers, though, I think of Coben, whose book In the Woods was my first experience at contemporary fiction (other than King).

What makes either good, though, is that the characters are relateable and I care about them. Of course, it needs great action and suspense to keep the pages burning by 🙂 And a great baddie we want to see get his comeuppance helps, too.

I know I’m reading a good thriller when
    1) I can’t put the book down even though it’s WAY past my bedtime
    2) I’m exhausted when the book is over because my heart has been pounding from the suspense!

I subscribe to your blog through google reader.

There’s got to be chemistry between the 2 central characters to make a great romance and oh yeah-gotta have the old sexual tension going on.;-)
For a great suspense or thriller-I prefer not to know who “did it” until the end-or at least half-way there.
Keep me guessing and you’ll keep me reading.

Let me know if I win!

I love a good thriller – that excitement of wanting to know what’s going to happen. I think the key is characters that you really care about and interesting twists in the story. But honestly, I don’t know exactly what it is, just that it’s fun when you can really lose yourself in the story!

    Thanks for the contest.

I’d love to read this – love reading thrillers. What makes a good one is when I can’t put it down – a real page turner. James Patterson has that affect on me

A good thriller book is one you stay up all night reading and you think about before you go to sleep. I always want someone to make a movie of a great thriller i have read. Thanks!

I like my romantic suspense to be heavier on the suspense than the romance. 😀 This one really looks good.

A good thriller for me is one that engages me to the point that I become oblivious to everything else, even dinner starting to burn:)
